The
St. Joseph’s Co-Workers of
Mother Teresa meet on the first Tuesday of each month (except August)
in the
Taunton Room from 2 to 4 pm and work for “Jesus in His most distressing
disguise of the Poor”. Among other activities this small
group knits garments
and blanket squares, and hand finishes small girls’ cotton
dresses. Time is
also set aside for prayer. In November tablets of soap are
gift-wrapped for the
needy. In December a financial contribution from our
sacrifice tin helps the
M.C.’s (Missionaries of Charity) to give poor London children a happier
Christmas.
All
the handiwork,
together with that of friends, finds its way through reliable channels
to E.
Europe or Africa (e.g. The Effingham nuns have sisters in the Congo.
Our Sr.
Brede is of the same Order).
The
Co-Workers come under
the Regional Superior of the M.C.’s, the newly elected Sr. Amada, who
is based
in London. After ten years of leading the Co-Workers in
Surrey, comprising
nearly 30 groups, Anne Pinches handed over to Philippa
Dupénois of Epsom a
month ago.
Annually
in July the Surrey
Co-Workers host a London Housebound Outing, in which the nuns bring
three or
four busloads of housebound people from inner London for an enjoyable
day in the
Surrey countryside. This year the outing will take place in
Epsom. On 10th
October Dorking will host the annual Day of Prayer for the Surrey
Co-Workers.
